ALAN HANCOCK

'JACK THE RIPPER' HISTORIAN

Following more than 30 years of service with South Yorkshire Police, I retired in June, 2013.

During my Police career I have been involved with investigations of every kind, from shoplifting to murder, but about 17 years ago my career took a dramatic turn when I was deliberately run down by a fleeing criminal. Although I received life threatening injuries, I eventually returned to work, albeit in a very different role.

I became a link between the Police, schools and colleges, eventually becoming the Police Advisor to many educational establishments and remaining in this role till the end of my career. My work attracted many awards over the years, culminating in my receiving the ‘Lifetime Achievement in Policing’ award in 2009.

Another life-changing event in my career was being selected by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to be deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2000. This was a 12 month United Nations mission and is the subject of one of my presentations, ‘A British Bobby in Bosnia’. I remain the only British Police Officer to return from such a mission having been awarded 4 medals.

During the last few years of my career I specialised in developing programmes to address criminal behaviour relating to young people. This led to the creation of such programmes as ‘Point7’, now a Home Office approved anti-weapon crime initiative and ‘Court in the Act’, a project where Sheffield University School of Law and Police work together to raise the aspirations of challenged young people.

Since retirement I have concentrated on my research into the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888 and now deliver this presentation around the UK, usually to sell-out audiences.
